Pedaling for Parkinson's

Story

April 11th is World Parkinson’s Day. For every dollar that you donate to the SHAKE IT UP Australia Foundation by World Parkinson's day 2015, I will cycle 1 km. By the end of February according to Strava I had already cycled 1623 km with 24,694 vertical metres since January 1st. So I decided that It was time to dedicate Peaks Challenge to Parkinson's research fundraising too. 235 km, 4000 vertical metres and I did it.

Then I got challenged to do an Everesting attempt on April the 11th (pick a hill climb, ride up and down it as many times as it takes so that you've ridden 8848 vertical metres). So if you want to see me punish myself some more, spread the word, help me raise a total of $1111, come and support me on the 11th and tell some people about how great exercise, especially cycling, is for people with Parkinson's Disease.

World Parkinson's Day is a special day on the calendar for the Parkinson’s community as it gives us the opportunity to promote awareness of Parkinson’s disease and how it affects the lives of so many Australians.

Most Australians are unaware of the prevalence and indiscriminate nature of Parkinson’s.  I want to help raise awareness this #WPD and at the same time fundraise to help find a cure for a disease that affects 100,000 Australians and their families.

I'd also like to highlight how cycling can be a viable disease treatment for Parkinson's sufferers.

Shake It Up Australia Foundation

Shake It Up Australia has a clear mission: To find the cure for Parkinson’s

There are an estimated 100,000 Australians living with Parkinson’s with another 38 diagnosed every day. 20% of those diagnosed are under 50 years old. With your help, we can change this!

Shake It Up has partnered with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to fund the world’s best research in Australia targeted at finding better treatments and ultimately a cure.

100% OF YOUR DONATION GOES DIRECTLY TO RESEARCH.  THAT’S RIGHT 100%!  Our founding directors cover all general expenses of the Foundation ensuring every cent of your donation makes a real difference in the quest to find a cure for Parkinson’s.

About Shake It Up

Shake It Up Australia Foundation together with our partner at The Michael J. Fox Foundation are the largest non-government funder of Parkinson's research across multiple institutes in Australia.   Founded in 2011 we have funded over $11.5M in research targeted at finding better treatments and ultimately the cure.

The Foundation was established by Clyde Campbell, a father of three and business owner who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009 at the age of 44.

Clyde set out to find out as much as he could about the disease and determine what he could do in a practical sense to assist. His search led him to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) in the United States and the remarkable work they do to fund medical research targeted at finding better treatments on the path to a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

The approach MJFF takes to assessing, funding and project managing the world’s best research all over the globe eliminates redundancy, ensures efficiency and unites the global community in the quest to find a cure.

Clyde realised that funding Parkinson’s research was the best thing that he could do to help himself, his family and the 100,000 other Australians living with the disease. With that clear in his mind, Clyde founded Shake It Up Australia Foundation (SIUAF) to give other Australians the opportunity to join his quest.
